Large 19th Century Khorassan Carpet.

4.11 x 2.96 m.

The city of Khorassan, in Northeast Persia, is home to an ancient and prestigious tradition of weaving, stretching back as far as the Sassanid Period (241-651 A.D.) – its pieces are best known today for the diversity of their designs, and the quality of their weaves, especially those of the 19th Century, which saw the creation of superb quality room-size Khorassan carpets tailored for the Western market.

This handsome Khorassan carpet, dating to circa 1870, features a charming terracotta ground, with a simple central medallion-and-four spandrels design, which serves to highlight the open space of the field and its delicate abrash (or, colour variation), well framed by a wide ivory border.

Preserved in very good condition, this 19th Century Khorassan carpet still retains all of its charming inner borders and fringes on each side, and with a fine age-related patina.

A charming piece, to suit a wide variety of interiors.
