For sale is this rare wine holder by Carl Krall, one of the leading ecclesiastical silversmiths at the latter part of the 19th century. The jug is topped with a single garnet. Condition is very good with a slight loss of gilding. Dated London 1891.
Barkentin & Krall are renowned as silversmiths to William Burges. This piece is by another famous gothic revival architect George Frederick Bodley (1827-1907) who was a close friend of William Morris and designer for Morris, Marshal, Faulkener & Co. The design for an “alter cruet” by Bodley for Krall, very similar to this one, can be found in the Victoria & Albert Museums collections Ref E.1005-1963.
This piece exemplifies the influence of gothic revival design on the arts and crafts movement, G F Bodley himself straddling both movements.
