Joseph Langsdale Pickering was born in 1845, in Walton, near Wakefield, Yorkshire. He began a career as a civil engineer before deciding to devote himself entirely to painting and went to France to train. He later exhibited widely and his pictures are now in good public and private collections throughout the world. He later lived in London where he died in March 1912.
"Sunday at Home" is a charming example. It measures 9"x 12" and is in the good original gilt frame giving an overall size of 17"x 20". It is signed lower right and on the reverse is a nice old label inscribed with the title.
