John Smith Atherton (1877-1943) was a painter in  oil and watercolour, born in Todmorden. A regular exhibitor, he showed at the RA, RSA, RI, RWA, GI and in the provinces specifically at the Yorkshire Union of Artists.

"A Wharfedale Holding" Yorkshire, is a lovely example of Atherton's work. An oil painting on board measuring 9"x 12" it is signed lower left and inscribed on the back. It is framed in a fine English frame finished in gold leaf giving an overall size of about 16"x 20".
