A classic and really good John Paul Cooper silver and shagreen domed box. The style of the silver wirework decoration and catch is in keeping with Cooper’s earlier box designs around 1910. The box is marked (not assayed) with Cooper’s JPC monogramme inside the box behind the catch.
I have handled many of these over the years and this one is in really good condition, with the silver mounts still tightly pinned and wholly original and a good colour to the shagreen. The interior wood carcass is clean and made of walnut and cedar. There is slight staining to the shagreen lid. The box still closes tightly, with the original clasp in working order, there is a slight gapping to the left front side of the box when closed, see images.
Note that the shagreen on this box is from the common skate, not shark or ray.
