Italy, Veneto, 12th/13th century.

A section of marble carved in low relief with a peacock, a running lion and scrolled vines with grapes.  

Carvings in this style, in marble or stone, were used to decorate the exterior of important palazzi and public buildings in and near Venice.  The motifs found in the carvings derive from Byzantine art.
