The Golden Age of Japanese Okimono by Laura Bordignon.

Summary

Introducing the most comprehensive guide on Japanese Okimono artists active during the Meiji Period (1868-1912)

An antiques dealer since 1991, Italian-born Laura Bordignon began to specialise in Japanese art in 1997, becoming a member of the British Antique Dealers Association in 2000. Since then she has been consulted by many collectors worldwide, with requests for guidance on expanding their existing collections or to start new ones. The fast growing interest in Japanese Okimono of the Meji period has been the main catalyst for this book, as very little has been published on the subject.

An essential reference for collectors, dealers and scholars, containing over 200 photographs of carvings from the Dr A.M Kanter Collection and listings of all Japanese artists from this period. The illustrations will allow readers to identify and interpret Japanese artists signatures, with English translation, and the book gives guidance to help collectors identify the various materials used for carvings; ivory, walrus, hippo and bone, and how to care for these fine objects.

The book also contains explanations of Japanese Mythology relevant to the pieces in the collection, as well as the various metalwork and shibayama techniques.
