William Gilbert Foster (1855-1906) was a senior member of the Staithes Group of artists. He exhibited widely and spent many years living and painting at Runswick Bay on the Yorkshire coast.

"The Boatman" is a lovely example of the work of Gilbert Foster. An oil on canvas measuring 20"x 30", it is in the original gilt frame giving an overall size of 28"x 38" and is signed lower left. On the back is a label with the title and a Leeds address for the artist. There is also a label for Fox, the Huddersfield, Yorkshire, art dealers.
