Georgian Mahogany Longcase Clock with Rocking Ship Automation, Joseph Kent, London.

 

Fine flame mahogany case with break arch hood, reeded pillars with brass capitals to either side of the glazed door surmounted by two brass finials.

Long break arch door with stepped moulding, reeded canted corners inset with brass and beautiful boxwood and satinwood fan inlay.  The stepped, shaped base with raised central panel and conforming fan inlay decoration.

Engraved silvered dial with Roman numerals and original ‘blued’ steel hands, subsidiary dials for both seconds and calendar. Rocking ship ( Tea Clipper) automation to the arch on a seascape, the dial signed Jos. Kent, London.

Substantial brass plated eight day weight driven movement of fine quality with anchor escapement striking the hours on a large bell.  Original brass cased weights and pendulum.

The inside of the case still retains the original clockmakers label, Joseph Kent and this clock is numbered No.19.  Circa 1810.

 

‘Watchmakers and clockmakers of the world’ by Brian Loomes lists Joseph Kent (II) known as Junior as working from Cannon Street, Ratcliffe Highway, London from 1809 to 1811.
