A large Georgian amethyst brooch.
This beautiful brooch has a very large oval facetted amethyst set within an ornate cannetille work border. It is in wonderful condition.
Cannetille is a variation of filligree work and was widely used in Georgian jewellery. It comprises fine gold wirework scrolls beads and whirls generally in a foliate design.
This type of work was used to embellish brooches and pendants and is all the more incredible when you consider it was done by hand with minimal 'techology'.
The brooch has its original pin to the reverse and has a later added roller clasp which keeps it safe when worn.
