An elegant George III Adam period painted salon armchair; the oval window pane back carved with a guilloche moulding above elegantly swept arms which are carved with acanthus leaves and have upholstered arm pads; the upholstered seat with a guilloche carved seat rail and raised on turned and fluted legs.
This armchair has been professionally reupholstered with a Fortuny top cover in red.
The design of this armchair is closely related to suites of chairs supplied by the eminent London cabinet-maker John Linnell to Inverary Castle, Argyllshire and Osterley Park, Middlesex.
John Linnell traded from 28 Berkeley Square in London's fashionable West End and supplied furniture to many of Robert Adam's clients. This included furniture for Sir Nathaniel Curzon, 1st Baron Scarsdale at Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire and Robert Child at Osterley Park.
