George III Pair of Lazy Tongs.
ENGLAND, CIRCA 1780
The tongs with scissor-like motion extending from 8.5cm to 38cm.
Brass 'lazy tongs' were named as such because they extend and retract and meant that the user did not have to bend or stretch when using them to tend the fire.
An example of similar form and probably from the same workshop is illustrated by Gentle and Feild, Domestic Metalwork 1640-1820, Antique Collectors' Club, 1994, p. 331, pl. 5.
