A large George III Antique silver bowl made by Simon Levy of Exeter in 1817. This fine bowl which still retains its wonderful original mercurial gilding and has bold gadroon and shell borders with unusual lion paws feet is in superb condition. The maker Simon Levy took over from his father Emmanuel in 1817/18 and first went bankrupt in 1823 and finally gave up silversmithing in 1832 when bankrupt again and then seems to have become a travelling salesman for optical supplies and turns up in the Channel Islands where he was murdered on 9 Jan 1846 in a cafe in St Helier. Simon Levy along with his father Emmanuel was a prominent member of Exeter’s Jewish community.
