George II Carved Oak Centre Table.
A handsome George II oak centre/ writing table; the well figured top above a shaped frieze and raised on powerful cabriole legs which have C scroll ear pieces and terminate in crisply carved claw and ball feet. The design of the table's claw and ball feet, with a clear space between the talon and the ball is extremely unusual.
Interestingly this feature is typical of furniture by John Goddard, one of the most highly sought after American cabinet-makers. Working in late Eighteenth Century Rhode Island Goddard created some exceptional pieces of furniture and a desk-bookcase by Goddard sold for a record $12.1 million in 1989!
Circa 1740.
