Remarkable Folk Art Ram's Head Trade Sign
The Primitive Carved Head Incorporating Specimen Curly Horns
Hand Carved and Painted Wood with Natural Horn
Northern European, c.1840
Dimensions
25.5cms high x 58.5cms wide x 29cms deepCondition report
An impressive and powerful Folk Art sculpture in the form of a Ram's Head, incorporating a pair of spectacular specimen curly horns. The Ram's Head is carved from solid wood, with attached carved ears, one of which is seemingly a later replacement. The head is mounted on the original backboard and is delightfully naïve in execution. Possibly made as a Tavern Sign or Butcher's Trade Sign, it is carved with primitively detailed eyes, nose and mouth and retains the historic painted surface. There is inevitable evidence of wear, with some scars and bruises and incidental losses, all commensurate with age and function. This is a rare and remarkable example of great scale.Stock number
