Condition report

Fashioned in silhouette, from sheet metal this stylised Eagle Tavern Sign is in genuine as-found original condition, now mounted on a bespoke metal base for presentation and display purposes. The powerful bird is depicted with its head looking right, above outstretched wings with stylised feathers to the tips and undersides. There are some minor traces of historic paint, particularly around the eye and the overall surface is weathered and oxidised commensurately with its age and function. There is a tangible sense of animated movement to the silhouette, lent by the open mouth, spread wings and feet. Probably made by a rural blacksmith for a local "Spreadeagle" pub or tavern, it comes from the heart of the figurative British pub sign tradition. Honest, untouched and a little battle scarred this is an authentic and compelling example.
