Condition report

A classic and unusually early ceremonial horse handled mangleboard, from the Norwegian Folk Art Tradition. The stylised horse handle has an open carved tail and reins, along with finely detailed mane, the body of the board is carved with a repeat stylised acanthus leaf motif and incorporates an acanthus carved pommel. There are significant traces of original "rosemaling" polychrome decoration throughout and much evidence of wear and handling to the centre section of the board and minor evidence of historic insect damage. In genuine "as found" condition, this example probably originated from the Gudbrandsdal Valley and is a spectacular early example of a betrothal gift, complete with the date 1708 and initials.
