Fine Primitive Floor Standard Tripod Lighting Device
With Rushnip and Candle Socket
Hand Wrought and Well Patinated Iron
English/Welsh, c.1750

Dimensions

63.5cms high

Condition report

An unusual floor standing example of primitive design and manufacture, this blacksmith made lighting device has a wonderfully naïve sculpture about it. The metal shows evidence of oxidisation and pitting and retains the original pin hinge to the rushnip jaw, the feet show inevitable evidence of wear and incidental losses, all commensurate with age and function. Discovered on the Welsh Boarders, probably near to where it originated, this is a delightful and unusual example in genuine "as found" condition, both graphically sculptural and fully functional.
