Magnificent Folk Art Marriage Cupboard.
Retaining Fine Original Painted Decoration.
Painted and Patinated Pine with Original Hinges, Escutcheons, Lock and Key.
Northern European, Inscribed and Dated "1827".

Condition:
A fine example in excellent original condition. The twin door cupboard retains the original hinges, escutcheon, lock and key and is set above a single long drawer to the base. The cupboard can also be broken down into two vertical halves  to enable easier transportation and stands on later replaced turned wooden feet. The piece retains most of the original painted decoration and is in remarkable condition, the simple palette is fresh and appealing and there are attractive details of stylised floral and foliate motifs to the cornice, panels and drawer front. The interior retains original hanging hooks and has been fitted with a later removable shelf. The front is sensitively decorated in a brushed grain effect, with the "propellor" everlasting soul motif between the panels and overlapping primitive painted pattern down the canted corners. Initialled and dated "1827" this is a fine example from the European Folk Art Marriage Cupboard tradition. A rare survivor, with a curiously contemporary feel.
