A fine pair of portraits, according to the labels pasted to the reverse of each, 'Sarah.....married Joseph Parker Oct. 8th 1801 & Joseph, son of Richard & Sarah Parker, died Nov 3rd 1850.

Each signed to the reverse of the panels 'John Bridges pinx 1838'. Within their original gilt gesso frames. Overall size: 18.5 in x 20.5 in image size: 10 in x 12 in.

John Bridges worked in Oxford from around 1818 through to the mid 1850's painting portrait groups and, as in this case, single portraits. Many of his subjects were either academics or soldiers. He exhibited 23 times at the RA, the British Institution on 24 occasions and 13 times at the Society of British Artists. His work is represented at Oriel College, Oxford and can be found engraved by both H. and S. Cousins. The Parker family are recorded as being from Oxford, many committed to the book trade, church or medicine.
