A very good matched pair of early eighteenth century candlesticks. One is made in 1714 by Joseph Bird of London and the other John Eckfourd II of London. They were presented in 1842 as a gift from the fellows and graduates of Brasenose College Oxford to Ashurst Turner Gilbert on his retirement from college duties and in that year he became Bishop of Chichester (see pictures). They are in good condition and are in a very desirable panelled octagonal style.
