Fine circa 1930 Qum Carpet.
3.73 x 2.76 m.
Unlike many of the other Persian rug-weaving centres, Qum only established itself as a center of production in the early 20th Century, though its carpets quickly established a reputation for the tightness of their weaves, the quality of the wool – often Merino – and the elegance and precision of their designs; this piece is certainly no exception: the richness of the dye, the grade of the weaving, and the skill of its makers are all visible in every detail.
The design of this example features a repeated paisley pattern, in a wide palette, ranging from tones of carnelian red to ocean blue, all in rich, vegetable dyes, complimented by the ivory field, and framed by a wide border. The paisley motif itself is in fact an ancient Zoroastrian design, originally representing the evergreen cypress tree, a symbol of everlasting life.
This piece, a timeless work of art, is in very good condition for everyday use, retaining its original borders and short fringes on both sides, and would make a charming addition to any setting.
