An Elegant Patinated Bronze Figure of a Roman Orator probably Julius Cesar by Mathurin Moreau 1822-1912, Signed Moreau Math Exposition des Beaux 1877.

French circa 1877.

Extremely well cast having a wonderful golden brown colour to the patinated bronze, shown standing in commanding attitude, head turned to his right with his right arm extended in gesture whilst holding a scroll in his left hand, with further scrolls beside his feet.

The base incised with the artist's name Moreau Math. Expton. des Beaux Arts 1877.

Moreau, born in Dijon in 1822, came from a distinguished family of artists with his father Jean-Baptiste Moreau being a renowned sculptor.

Mathurin earned many medals and prizes for his works at salons and international exhibitions.
