Fine and rare George III period Pontypool Japan tole wall cistern;  the reservoir finely decorated with gilded chinoiserie vignettes on a black ground and with its original tinned interior and brass tap;  the pagoda-shaped detachable cover is similarly decorated and surmounted by a pierced gallery and a central gilded finial;  together with a separate small drip-tray. Circa 1795

This cistern is either the work of Thomas, James or John Allgood who took over the business founded by their father in the 1730s and worked separately from workshops in Pontypool and Usk.  Their work was considered to be of exceptional quality and superior to that of their contemporaries in Wolverhampton, Birmingham and the midlands.  [Ref:  'Skill of the Pontypool Japanners' by G. Bernard Hughes, 'Country Life Annual', December 1968 and the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff].
