A fine 19th Century Austrian satin sycamore and purple-heart wood (Amaranth) writing desk undoubtedly from Vienna.
Austrian, Vienna. Circa 1850-60.
Decorated all over with purple-heart wood / neo-classical finely carved mouldings and contrasting satin sycamore, the rectangular top having a purple-heart wood crossbanded edge enclosing a gilt tooled leather lined insert with a raise shaped ledge to the rear, above three frieze locking drawers and a kneehole flanked by geometric-panelled cupboards with foliate enclosed monograms and button spandrels on short fluted turned tapering legs.
Of an excellent refined design, in the South German / Austrian tradition using light woods with contrasting darker woods, a legacy of the early 19th century Biedermeier manner. The style of the folate-inlaid band on the top back ledge is reminiscent of certain Viennese design features indicating its origin.
A very smart 19th century writing desk, of rare design and superb quality being finished to the rear so to be able to stand freely with the room / study.
