Fine 19th Century English Needlepoint Carpet.

2.20 x 2.13 m.

English needlepoint carpets have been produced since the 16th Century, but experienced a real renaissance during the 19th Century, incorporating a vast array of new colours and styles, in part due to the impact of the burgeoning Arts and Crafts movement, pioneered in Britain by figures like William Morris, himself well known for his needlepoint textiles.

This mid 19th Century example features an elegant, understated palette, rare in pieces from this period, in soft earthy tones of caramel and hazelnut brown.

The design features a series of scrolling vegetal motifs, both in the central field and also in its wide double borders.

A stylish piece, in very good condition for everyday use – remarkably so given its age – with a refined grace to suit either a classic or contemporary interior.

We recommend the use of an antislip underlay with this carpet, provided complimentary with your purchase.
