An Extremely Rare Set of Six English Carved Oak Angels. Appleby Castle. Circa 1500-1520.
This set of six English carved oak angels have adorned the foot posts of the 16th century state bed of the Countess Lady Anne Clifford in the state bedroom at Appleby Castle, Westmoreland. Please see pic.
This fine state bed is dated 1590 the year of the birth of Lady Anne Clifford.
Until recently they had been fixed to the foot posts of this magnificent bed, but rusty nails had finally perished, and we managed to acquire them.
The four slightly smaller than the other two are dated from 1500-1520, the two larger ones are slightly later in date, but were all part of the bed.
Provenance Lady Anne Clifford’s state bedroom, Appleby Castle, Westmoreland.
Four @ 16” high
two @ 18” high.
