Antique Agra Carpet, c. 1890

4.45 x 3.48 cm

A beautiful 19th-century Agra carpet with a remarkably tight weave which gives great clarity to the crisp drawing. The exquisite backdrop, with muted greens, creates a perfect harmony with the gracefully aged vegetable-dyed colours in its design.  It features a simple, elegant composition in the central field, framed by over a dozen borders.

The Indian city of Agra, best known as the home of the Taj Mahal, has a long tradition of master weaving, dating back to the great period of Mughal Art from the 16th century.  The workshops of Agra created carpets of exemplary quality and artistry, particularly highly sought-after during the 19th Century - these pieces are often found in historic houses in both the UK and Europe.

This early Agra carpet is in very good to excellent condition and still retains its original borders on all four sides. -a rare feature for a rug dating 1890.

A sophisticated Agra carpet with a quiet formality, well suited to a stylish interior setting.
