Exceptional Sarouk-Feraghan Carpet.

Origin: Persia.

Circa: 1870.

Antique Sarouk-Feraghan carpets are one of the most luxurious classically derived furnishing carpets. Their weaves tends to be relatively tight and the colours rich, yet soft.

They are famed for their interesting combinations of sophisticated workshop designs and the spontaneity of graphic tribal/village drawings.

This 19th century Sarouk-Feraghan carpet has a remarkable fine weave which explains the clarity of the drawing and a less-common overall design instead of the traditional central medallion motif.

Each drawing in the central field is cleverly repeated in a different shape and colour combination, framed by a wide terracotta border and a further dozen detailed ones.  The colours in the harmonious colour composition are all vegetable dyed which have aged beautifully.

In good practical condition, still retaining its beautiful borders on all four sides, a remarkable feature for a rug dating c.1870. A handsome, elegant example with a quiet formality to blend in a wide variety of settings.
