An Exceptional Regency Period Games Table in Solid and Veneered Lacewood Inlaid with Ebony to a Design by George Smith, English circa 1810.
The rectangular top divided into three sliding sections. The two outer ones opening to reveal compartments, the central one opening to reveal a backgammon board inlaid with various woods with a chess board to the reverse of the top. The frieze on all sides inlaid with stylised motifs in ebony and the D shaped end supports similarly inlaid with acanthus and ebony stringing. The twin panelled columns joined by turned stretchers and raised on four carved paw feet.
This highly unusual table is remarkable as it is constructed entirely from lacewood, a timber rarely used at its time. The design is taken from plate 78 of George Smith’s ‘A Collection of Designs for Household Furniture’, published in 1806, showing the same overall form with variations to the decorations.
