Exceptional circa 1920 Tabriz Carpet.

4.71 x 3.38 m.

One of the most attractive Tabriz carpets we've come across in a long time - this piece, dated to c. 1920, has a wonderfully dynamic design, characteristic of earlier 17th-century weavings, featuring large-scale patterns that lend the work a sense of carefree spontaneity. Each motif in the central field is creatively repeated in a variety of different forms and shades, across an ivory ground which provides a perfect complimentary backdrop to the gracefully aged, vegetable-dyed colours, framed by a elegant pale green border.

The city of Tabriz in Northwest Persia has been known as a major centre of fine rug weaving since at least the 14th Century. Antique Tabriz carpets are distinguished by their tight weaves and remarkable adherence to the traditions of Classical Persian rug weaving design. This carpet, from the early 20th Century, is a particularly rare example of its type, since it demonstrates a much greater creative freedom than one would expect of a Tabriz rug from its era.

This piece is in very good practical condition for everyday use, retaining its outer borders on all sides.

An attractive example, in a rare large format, which would make a wonderful addition to a tasteful setting.
