Born in Bradford, Yorkshire in 1868, Ernest Higgins Rigg studied at Bradford College of Art then at the renowned Académie Julian, in Paris. His attractive open air scenes were in the manner of French late nineteenth century painting. He exhibited at RA, RBA, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and elsewhere, working in many parts of England. He was a prominent member of the Staithes Group and later lived for a time in Letchworth, Hertfordshire.
"Haymaking in Swaledale" is a lovely quality example of his work. Measuring 12" x 20" it is signed lower left and is in a fine English gilt frame giving an overall size of 20"x 27".
