Enormous 19th Century Camphor Campaign Trunk.

A remarkable mid 19th century camphor wood military campaign trunk, of exceptionally rare monumental proportion. Having lift up lid enclosing fabric lined interior, original brass bound decoration, original flush fitted handles and original carrying handles to sides.

Frankly it's rather difficult to know what to say about this remarkable piece of furniture. We have handled many military campaign items of furniture over the years, especially trunks, but have never come across one remotely close to being on the scale which this one is.

It is actually so large that it makes a mockery of the theory that these campaign trunks were made for high ranking army officials to use in their quarters at whatever the latest point of conflict may be before being easy to pack up and move at a moments notice, leaving the contents of the interior where they already are. There is absolutely no way that this particular campaign trunk would have been being moved very regularly, particularly once it is full of stuff, it would be impossible to lift off the ground! We believe it must have been made specifically for an officers UK home, or office, but in the campaign style.

From a practical perspective this is a quite remarkable, functional item of furniture. It would be fabulous at the end of a bed full of linen or whatever else you may wish to store out of the way there. It would also make a fabulous show stopping coffee table or similar.

As you can imagine from the scale of the piece it is pretty robust and remains in relatively good condition. There are of course the expected old marks, scuffs, scrapes, digs etc, but certainly nothing to worry about. It comes with working key and a neatly fabric lined interior, so is ready to be placed immediately into the home. Another lovely touch is the apparent originality of all brasswear on the piece.
