English Oak Boarded Chest, circa 1580 – 1600.  The carved front is of superb quality depicting opposing moon-faced men’s heads on typical Renaissance style serpentine bodies.  For a relatively small chest it is constructed with high quality dense and heavy Oak.

This chest has had a life over the years and it would appear that the top was at some time reduced either due to sapwood rot or because it was broken.  The wider front section which looks original is now hinged to a 7 centimetre strip of aged timber that is fixed above the leading edges of the back board and sides.  The side boards have been sawn off and later overlapping pieces of wood have been applied to make the feet and raise it above floor level.  All of these adaptations have been made some considerable time ago.

Dimensions:  Height 42 centimetres, Width 90 centimetres, Depth 39 centimetres.
