A fine and colourful mid 19th century English Needlework Carpet.

Hand worked woollen stitches on canvas.

Circa 1850.

ABRASH, Colour variations in Needlework Carpets and Rugs.

Antique Needleworks were woven from multiple dye lots during their creation. As one dye lot was replaced by another there were often variations in the colour causing what is known as " Abrash ".

These variations were not immediately noticable by the weaver, but became more apparent with the passing of time, giving the Carpet or Rug a unique character.
