English Naïve School Animal Portrait
Depicting a Grey Horse in a Stable
Oils on Canvas
English, c.1850
Dimensions
33.5cms high x 40cms wide ( Framed)Condition report
An engaging English Naïve School equestrian portrait of a Grey Horse standing in a stable, before a gothic arched window. The work is painted in oils on canvas and is in excellent original condition. The canvas is unlined and there is evidence of craquelure all over. The surface has been professionally cleaned of historic aged varnishes and surface dirt and re-varnished. The horse itself is depicted standing four-square, with its head tilted towards the viewer, it is primitively painted with pointed ears, stylised mane and tail and with little attention to anatomical detail. Intrinsically primitive in composition and execution, this is a charmingly individual work, dating to the mid C19th. Professionally re-framed in a bespoke contemporary ebonised frame with gilt slip.Stock number
