The BADA Christmas Gift ListEarly 19th Century Anglo-Indian Childs Chest Of Drawers.
An Attractive And Very Good Quality Anglo-Indian, 19th Century, Padouk Wood Childs Chest, Having Well Figured Rectangular Top With Gadrooned Carving To Edge, Over Four Drawers, Retaining Original Turned Wooden Knobs, Raised On Original Attractive Reeded, Turned, Bun Feet.
Much furniture was made for European citizens during their presence in colonial India throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Confusingly this falls into a number of different categories, with a number of different names and sometimes more than one name being used to descrive exactly the same thing. However the phrase Anglo-Indian is widely regarded as anything which was made for the British market and stylistically these items will usually be constructed in a classical English design, but often with a twist and will more often than not also be constructed using the native woods of India, such as teak, camphor wood and padouk.
This sweet little childs chest, constructed from Padouk is certainly Anglo-Indian and is really quite a charming, useful and good quiality little item indeed.
Probably made for a child originally, owing mainly to the scale, it has been constructed using beautiful, well figured padouk wood and retains a lovely warm colour to this day. It also retains its original handles and feet which is quite unusual.
It would ake a great coffee table alongside a settee or chair, or possibly it would even work as a bedside chest, or as extra storage under or next to a desk in an office.
As with all items which we offer for sale, our highly skilled, trained traditional antique furniture restorers have ensured that this chest of drawers is in its best possible condition before we presented it for sale and it has also received a natural wax polish, so it is ready for immediate placement within the home.
