A repoussé copper plaquette in the form of the Pelican in her Piety.

Italian, mid 15th century.

Measures 5.7 x 5cm.

The representation of the pelican in the act of sacrificing herself in order to nourish her young with her blood is a reference to the sacrifice of Christ for humankind.

A popular subject in ecclesiastical art, commonly used during the Middle Ages.
