Cizhou pillow.
High-fired stoneware.
Song Dynasty (AD 960-1279).
Cizhou kilns, Southern Hebei, North China.
H: 11.5cm D: 23.3m.
A Cizhou painted bean-shaped pillow with the concave top decorated with flowers within an incised lobed border. The floral splay is painted in a rich dark brown slip over a white slip base-layer, covered overall with a transparent glaze. The base is left unglazed exposing the reddish-brown buff stoneware.
Cizhou ware is a type of ceramic made in the northern part of China during the Song, Jin and Yuan dynasties. These wares were characterized by heavy potting and freely drawn designs, both exhibited on this pillow. They were produced in large quantities and considered a popular ware, (non-imperial) used for daily life and also for burial.
