Chinese Large Ink Paintings on Silk with Huntsmen.

Mid-19th Century.

The set of four large framed painting each depict different complex pictures.   The paintings are executed in a bold and expressive style, with rich blacks and bold brushstrokes. The scenes are full of detail, with carefully rendered figures, animals, and landscapes.

Dimensions: 73 inches x 26 5/16 inches wide; Sight 65 3/4 inches x 20 2/4 inches wide.

The first painting depicts a variety of male figures hunting different game in different parts of the scene. In the center, two men are hawking, while at the top of the painting, a group of horsemen with a dog are chasing rabbits and deer.

The second painting shows groups of horsemen and tents, perhaps returning from the hunt. The huntsmen are all dressed in traditional Chinese hunting attire, with long robes and hats. The scene is set in a mountainous landscape, with snow-capped peaks in the distance.

The third painting depicts huntsmen with bows and arrows, while in the lower portion of the painting, two men, one dark-skinned, are riding camels loaded with bolts of fabric. The fourth painting shows groups of men on horseback in valleys between mountain peaks. The top vignette shows mounted horsemen with a tiger, while in the center, two men are crossing a wooden bridge with a young bear. In the lower portion of the painting, two standing male figures are talking in an animated manner.

The paintings are double matted, with a thin green silk inner mat and a wide cream-colored outer mat. The paintings are within gilt frames.

The paintings are in good condition overall, with some minor wear and tear consistent with age and use.

The paintings are an excellent example of Chinese ink painting from the mid-19th century. The paintings are well-executed and depict a variety of scenes of hunting and other activities.
