A Chinese honey shadow agate snuff bottle, carved in low relief with a scholar seated in a naturalistic raft, with a bat in flight above his head, on a rich honey coloured naturally mottled ground, the reverse of lighter tone, with superbly hollowed interior, convex rim and short raised foot rim, agate stopper.
2 ¾ inches, 7 cm total height with stopper.
18th– early 19th century, 1760-1820.
- From the V.W.S France collection (1918-1974), acquired by his father in China in the 1930s.
