A fine late 19th century Caucasian Shirvan Rug with slight abrash to the middle of the rug.

Hand knotted in wool.

ABRASH, Colour variations in oriental Carpets and Rugs.

Antique, hand knotted Oriental Rugs were woven from multiple dye lots during their creation. As one dye lot was replaced by another there were often variations in the colour causing what is known as ” Abrash ”

These variations were not immediately noticable by the weaver, but became more apparent with the passing of time, giving the Carpet or Rug a unique character.

Caucasian Rugs.

Rugs woven in the Caucasus, the area between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, north of Persia, enjoy universal popularity for their harmony of colour and geometrical designs. Appealing to western tastes they blend to both antique and modern furnishings.
