A London Thames-side scene with a sailor dancing a hornpipe watched by a crowd of sailors and ladies in the yard outside an inn. The inn sign depicts a three masted ship.
Wicksteed developed from painting land and seascapes to scenes of urban life. His paintings, which often included animated groups of figures, had a popular following. He exhibited at The Royal Academy from 1802 and also at the British Institution.
Exhibited: This is the painting exhibited at the British Institution in 1835, catalogue no. 223 entitled “Sailors on Shore”
