Sailor's Woolwork

British Sailor's Woolwork of Two Royal Navy Ships including a Paddleship

1875

Textile

The sailor's woolwork, known as woolie, depicts a starboard-side view of two Royal Naval Ships leaving land on a flat blue sea. As they sail and steam out to sea, a large church on a promontory can be seen in the background.

The largest of the two ships is a Second Rate battleship under sail with a long white banner flying from the Mainmast. She also flies the White Ensign- white caps can be seen at her bow and stern.

A little ahead of this ship is another Royal Navy vessel under steam and sail. She is significantly smaller than the battleship. Steam can be seen issuing from her central funnel propelling her large paddle wheels forward through the sea and she is also using sails fore and aft.

The ominous sky above, still retaining its original colors is designed in various shapes of dark and light blue with white clouds too. All within a maple frame.
