A charming portrait of a young child dating from circa 1800.
Full of symbolism and perhaps painted as a birthday commission; the held domino showing the viewer the three dots which may indicate the child's age.
Scattered around are more dominoes amongst Chinese mother-o-pearl gaming counters including fish.
The child holds a foxes tail on a stick and wears a silver rattle and whistle with a coral teething peg; coral being considered a protector of children and women against illnesses ranging from stomachaches to smallpox.
English circa 1800, within a fine giltwood and gesso frame, original or period to the painting.
o.s: 34.5 in x 43.5 in.
