An unlikely but lovely arts and crafts enamel plaque of a dog on a chair. The enamel has not been foiled and with its green and brown tones the plaque is rather muted but the overall effect is charming. The chair cleverly fills the picture and the artist has captured something of the dog’s contented personality. Altogether the plaque has the great virtue of making me, at least, smile.
The muted palette possibly dates the plaque to c 1930, though it is quite impressionistic (Matisse even!) in composition which points to c 1910. There is an original framers label to the back for H (Harry) E Richards, 270 High Street Lewisham. The only date I can find for this framer at this address is 1914.
I am unsure of the breed of dog, quite terrier like with a hint of spaniel. Artist is unknown.
Condition of the plaque is excellent and original. The frame presents well but has some losses to the raised borders (lower and upper right side corners)
