Art Nouveau Wall Bracket.

Inimitably Art Nouveau, a style which exploded onto the scene in the early 1890s and is very much associated with Paris and yet spread across the Western World.

Belgium was also pre-eminent in this style with the work of architects like Victor Horta and Gustave Strauven and it is from Belgium that our brass and black marble wall bracket originates. It would have been used for storing matches which were then struck on the panel found below the gourd like design.

Black marble can regularly be found both in Pietra Dura table tops and as clock cases and was readily available in Belgium.

This design echoes the functionalist wing of the Jugendstil movement from about 1885.
