Breton Carving.

A carved wood panel depicting a contented looking Breton shepherd.

Dating from around 1860 to 1880, this carving is a panel from a monumental piece of furniture, probably a cabinet made for a house in Pont-Aven which is in the Department of Finistere in North Western France.

The town of Pont-Aven was made famous by the artist Gauguin who painted the town`s water mill.

The local antiques` dealer from whom I purchased the panel told me that he had to dismantle the huge cabinet and extract several panels because the cabinet, as it stood, was not only virtually unsaleable but also almost immovable.
