Antique Ziegler Sultanabad Carpet, circa 1880s.

4.91 x 3.94 m.

This attractive rug belongs to a group of carpets specifically commissioned in Western Persia during the Late 19th/Early 20th century to complement European furnishing tastes. They are best known for their grand scale drawings, quiet formality and use of soft understated colours - as such, these were not only highly sought after in their own day, and are often seen in grand stately homes in Europe and the UK, but have continued to be in demand among designers and collectors today, for their ability to unite classical and contemporary design elements.

This highly decorative Ziegler Sultanabad of the late 19th century features an elegant, spacious drawing, over a soft terracotta field, and framed by a wide, simple border. Being an earlier example, the weave remarkably fine, which lends a real clarity to its design.

In very good preserved condition for everyday use, this piece still retains its fringes and borders on both sides, with gracefully-aged vegetable dyes.

A stylish example with a quiet formality that would be a beauty addition to variety of settings, rare in this large format.
