Antique Northwest Persian Runner, circa 1900s.

4.15 x 0.99 m.

‘North West’ refers to a myriad group of villages with weaving styles borrowed from a wide range of influences from the surrounding regions, particularly Turkey and the Caucasus, and often including unique, tribal interpretations of sophisticated workshop weavings from further South.

This fine c. 1900s example is woven in high-grade hand-spun wool, with wonderful organic dyes – a soft saffron tone in the central field, and muted cornflower blue and ochre reds in the drawing. The design is remarkably open for a piece of this narrow format, lending the runner a rare feeling of space and balance.

Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its three outer borders preserved on all sides - its vegetable dyed colours have taken on a fine patina with age.

A charming tribal piece, to suit a wide variety of settings.
